Main objective

Τo increase the water supply capacity of Kimolos island through the installation of a new Reverse Osmosis desalination unit of 220 m3/day.

The proposed desalination unit is practically an extension of the existing desalination plant and will be powered by a photovoltaic array of 100 kWp while at the same time the high concentration reject (brine) is treated in part by an innovative Brine Treatment System of a capacity of 4.0 m3/day. As a result the total freshwater production will increase by 224 m3/day.

Specific objectives

Assess the possibility to use geothermal energy to support the unit

Identify potential geothermal sites for heat and power generation by mapping the surface temperature with high resolution Remote Sensing Thermal Data and correlating it with the geological and tectonic structure.

Develop a simulation-optimization model of the innovative brine processing unit and its verification during the system operation. With appropriate parameterization, the model will be able to be applied to other brine processing units too.

Assess the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the BriZE units.

Widely disseminate the project outputs to other Greek islands with similar problems of water scarcity.

Disseminate the project results to the donor countries, to Europe and Internationally.

Develop bilateral relations between institutions of the donor countries and Greece to stimulate the exchange of knowledge and experiences and to strengthen the networking and their future cooperation.
